Dr A.Alia (Leiden Institute of Chemistry)
"Imaging zebrafish using ultrahigh field magnetic resonance microimaging"
Biography:
Dr. Alia is an assistant professor at Leiden Institute of Chemistry (Leiden University). She did her Ph.D. in Biosciences in 1992 (New Delhi, India). From 1995-1997 she worked as COE visiting professor and Fellow of Japanes Society of Promotion of Science at NIBB, Okazaki Japan. In 1997 she joined Leiden Institute of chemistry at Leiden University (Netherlands). From January 2014 Dr. Alia will also partly serve as a group leader at Department of medical physics and biophysics at Leipzig University (Germany).
Alia’s research concentrates on developing methods and application of magnetic resonance microimaging (μMRI) and MR spectroscopy for probing in vivo metabolic changes and revealing potential biomarkers of various human diseases using animal models (mouse, zebrafish) and analyzing the structure and functional mechanism of membrane protein complexes.
She received many awards including young scientist award (DST), C.J. Kok Prize for the discovery of the year (2003), International stichting Alzheimer onderzoak award and Alzheimer Forschung Initiative grant award. Alia published more that 100 research article. She also edited special journal issues on prospects of MRI and co-oganised the Lorentz workshop.
In her presentation she will discuss how ultrahigh magnetic field microimaging allows imaging of zebrafish from embryos till adult stage non-invasively and can provide access to the disease pathology in vivo .
