Dr Andy Filby
"Imaging Flow Cytometry: A Cytometric Paradigm"
Biography
Dr Andrew Filby obtained his PhD in molecular and cellular immunology at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) studying the role of the Src family kinases Lck and Fyn in controlling T cell activation and differentiation. After successful completion and publication of his thesis findings, he moved to another NIMR-based lab to study the immune response to murine retroviruses. In both projects, he was a major user of cytometric technology, including flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. After a brief foray into the world of commercial science, he is now the deputy head of the FACS laboratory at the London Research Institute where he has established himself as a significant figure in the field Imaging Flow Cytometry (IFC).
In this talk, Dr Filby will discuss the wider issues surrounding IFC and how it can be used to look at a number of well-defined research questions including the study of asymmetric cell division in the immune system. It will also highlight the strengths and caveats of such an approach in comparison to other methods, defining IFC as a truly cytometric technology by facilitating the measurement of single cell properties on a population wide basis.
